A violent altercation that resulted in a stabbing occurred Monday morning in South Knoxville. A violent altercation that resulted in a stabbing occurred Monday morning in South Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A violent altercation that resulted in a stabbing occurred Monday morning in South Knoxville.

The Knoxville Police Department responded at 11:23 a.m. to a call at the Spanish Trace Apartments at 2300 Davenport Road. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Billy Swann, who had apparently been struck in the head with a hammer and stabbed with a knife.

Fred Thomas, 73, of Davenport Road has been charged with one count of attempted first degree murder and is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Swann was interviewed by Knoxville Police Officers in the ambulance. Swann stated that he was attacked by Thomas at the apartment complex. According to Swann, Thomas entered Swann's apartment uninvited. Swann stated that the two spoke calmly for a brief period before he was attacked. KPD indicates that money may have been the motive in the altercation

Swann was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is being treated for serious injuries which do not appear to be life threatening.
