HARRIMAN (WATE) - Men and women who have served our country will now be able to get their hands on some much needed health care services. A new VA outpatient clinic's doors are now open in Roane County as of Wednesday afternoon.

There are 6,000 veterans in Roane County, and having a new clinic this close to home just makes it easier for them to schedule an appointment with a doctor.

Vietnam veteran Cliff Cole has been driving half-a-day for the last two years, up and down the interstate, just to visit the doctor.

"For my eyes about every three or four months. It's just as scheduled and needed," he said.

Cole and veterans like him have been needing a clinic closer to home since the one in Rockwood closed in 2012.

"I would say half a dozen, maybe more than that, said 'Well I just quit when that clinic closed. I walked away.'" said Roane County Veterans Service Officer Brian Dunn.

Now, Roane County veterans can walk-in for their appointment at their new clinic in Harriman which opened Wednesday, it will help with their basic health needs and more.

"We have mental health services here focusing on PTSD, or general fatigue from combat," said Regional Medical Director Dr. Hope Jordan.

It's a way to close the gap in services since half of Roane County's veterans were traveling to Murfreesboro or Knoxville for care.

"It's the right place, the right time," added Dunn.

And a big help to those who sacrificed so much. "Having a home clinic here is a blessing for all of us," said Cole.

The first patient at this clinic was seen in early March, though now veterans needing an appointment or transferring care to the clinic can now enroll.

Veterans are asked to call the VA Enrollment Center at (615) 873-8130 or enroll online by clicking here.

The Harriman Clinic is an outpatient facility, located at 2305 North Gateway Avenue and is open Monday-Friday 8:00am to 4:30 pm.
