KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A man is lucky to be alive after escaping from an overnight house fire in South Knox County Friday.

Rural/Metro firefighters responded just after midnight to the fire on the 3200 block of Topside Road.

Officials at the scene say the man was inside the house when it caught fire, but he made it out okay.

However, the outcome of the blaze could have been much worse.  Crews say the home did not have working smoke alarms.

The house was damaged in the fire but is not a total loss.

The Red Cross is currently assisting the man.

The cause is under investigation.
