6 News asked Dr. Chris Shaver at Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics what are the most important things someone can do to help heal a broken bone?

Shaver stated, "If we tell you to stay off of it, you should stay off of it, if you're a smoker, smoking will kill the fracture healing process, keeping your diabetes under control--those can be a great assistance in healing these fractures. "

Taking broccoli for vitamin K, milk are helpful for the bone healing process and Dr. Shaver also recommends a multi- vitamin and vitamin D supplements as those won't require a change to your diet.

Dr. Shaver also stated that drugs for osteoporosis can help minimize the chance of fracture but they won't help a fracture heal. They actually slow down the healing process once a fracture has occurred.

Here are the most important questions to ask your doctor:

When can I start putting weight on my broken bone?

How long will I be off work?

Is there any reason I won't do well?

If I have to have surgery, what are the risks?
