90 teenagers carry cross throughout Blount County

WALLAND (WATE) - On this Good Friday, dozens of teenagers began a 30-mile journey carrying a cross.

They'll make the trip from Walland to Friendsville over two days, with each person carrying the cross about a quarter of a mile at a time.

Church leaders say that's about the same distance Jesus carried the cross, and it's an important experience so the kids can truly understand what that means.

"Easter is all about the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ," said Tommy Roberts, Youth Pastor of Rio Central Church. "What we do in our culture is okay, kids hunting eggs, that's fun, we have a good time. But we want to keep the focus on Jesus being risen."

Around 90 teens will take part before the event wraps up on Easter Sunday morning.

Friday they were on Tuckaleechee Pike. This weekend they'll go all throughout Alcoa and Maryville.
