I-40E lanes in N.C. reopen after chemical truck crash; one westbound lane remains closed

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WATE) - Eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 reopened Monday afternoon between Asheville, N.C. and the Tennessee state line, but one of the westbound lanes remain closed due to an overturned chemical tanker at mile marker 6.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Mark Nagi reported on Twitter that the eastbound lanes reopened just after 4 p.m. TDOT crews are on standby to assist North Carolina hazmat teams if needed.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the right lane of I-40W is expected to open at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic traveling west into Tennessee is being detoured. Drivers should take Exit 53B for I-240 West, then Exit 4A for I-26 West. Traffic should then take I-26 West until reaching I-81 and take Exit 8A for I-81 South until you reach I-40 West in Jefferson County.
