Donnie Tyndall introduced as new UT head basketball coach

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The University of Tennessee has hired Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall as the program's head basketball coach. UT made the official announcement early Tuesday morning.

Tyndall, 43, is taking over less than a week after former coach Cuonzo Martin left the team to accept a job at California.

UT Athletics Director Dave Hart formally introduced Tyndall as the new head coach Tuesday afternoon.

Tyndall said his entire staff will be coming from Southern Miss, but not necessarily in the same roles. During the press conference he stressed the need to unite the fan base saying he's a big fan of Bruce Pearl, but that it's time to move on.

Tyndall posted a 56-17 record in two seasons at Southern Mississippi and average more than 21 wins during his eight seasons as a Division I head coach with an overall record of 170-102, including six seasons at his alma mater, Morehead State. Tyndall played at MSU from 1990-1993.

Southern Miss reached the NIT Quarterfinals in his two seasons at Southern Miss, including wins over Toledo and Missouri in this year’s tournament.

Tyndall isn't a total stranger to Tennessee. He has also worked as an assistant at Middle Tennessee State.

A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Tyndall earned his bachelor’s degree from Morehead State in 1993 and received his master’s degree from LSU in 2000.
He has two daughters: Taylor Elise and Grace Elizabeth, and he is engaged to Nikki Young.
