Tennessee baseball team drops 8-7 thriller at LSU

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Michael Laird hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give No. 6 LSU an 8-7 win over Tennessee in Baton Rouge on Friday night.

The Vols opened the scoring by tagging Tigers starter Aaron Nola (7-1 0.88 ERA) with key hits from Christin Stewart and Nick Senzel.

Will Maddox singled and was moved to second on a sac by A.J. Simcox. Stewart delivered an RBI single to center to score Maddox and give the Vols a 1-0 lead. Senzel then followed with a blast off the wall in right-center to drive in Stewart. Tennessee led 2-0.

The Vols loaded the bases off Nola in the third inning, but failed to score a run.

The Tigers showed their toughness in the fourth inning by lacing four doubles off UT starter Peter Lenstrohm and taking a 5-2 lead.

Tennessee made it 5-3 with an RBI single by Will Maddox in the sixth and then loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Derek Lance who gave the Vols a 6-5 lead with a bases-clearing double.

Nathaniel Maggio's RBI double in the seventh gave Tennessee a 7-5 lead.

LSU added single runs in the seventh and eighth to tie the game 7-7.
