KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A report of a cutting Monday evening ended with a police pursuit and a suspect wounded in an officer involved shooting, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Officers say they were responding to reports of a cutting at the Stonewall Apartments on Sevier Avenue around 8:20 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they say a car fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

The driver, later identified as Charles Franklin, 32, then apparently lost control of the car and ran off the road near the intersection of Sevier and McClung Avenues.

The crash reportedly happened in front of two officers working a separate investigation. They say that when they approached the car, Franklin tried to run over the officers.

Both officers allegedly shot at Franklin in what officials are calling an attempt to save their lives.

Officers reportedly pursued Franklin for about four miles before he pulled over. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police say he had been shot in the hand. He was taken to UT Medical Center, but is expected to be okay.

When he is released from the hospital, Franklin will be charged with two counts of attempted second degree homicide. His bond will be $600,000.

Initially it appeared a woman had been injured in the stabbing, but it turned out a man, David Dotson, 29, suffered a cut to his wrist. Officers say the cutting began with an argument between two people over spilled beer.

Officers say that at this point it is unclear if the two incidents are related. Investigators are still trying to determine what, if any, connection Franklin had to the reported stabbing at the Stonewall Apartments.

Both officers, Adam Parnell and Adam Barnett, were taken to UT Medical Center for evaluation and released. They will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure.

Neither officer was injured.
