KNOXVILLE (WATE) -  Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett’s FY14-15 will not fully fund the school board’s budget request.

The Knox County budget includes about $427.8 million for the Knox County School System, which falls below the BOE’s request of $432,335,000.

Knox County Finance Director Chris Caldwell said the schools’ budget is a $7.9 million increase over last year’s schools’ budget.

Caldwell also said the Knox County Schools’ budget has increased $49 million since FY11.

The BOE and McIntyre said the additional $4.5 million they requested from County Commission was meant for teacher raises.

Burchett told 6 News the BOE can allocate the funds for teacher raises from its current budget.

“If it was that important, I would suggest that the school system take it out of the $428 million they received,” Burchett said. “We're talking about one percent. I come from a family of public educators there's nothing I'd like more but it's not my responsibility."
