New Tennova hospital plans could be moving forward

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A new hospital may be going up  in West Knoxville.

6 news obtained a copy of a letter to Tennova employees saying the company is working with the state to get the plans finalized.

The proposed hospital would be near Middlebrook Pike and Old Weisgarber Road, and it is not without controversy.

"I think as a neighborhood we had concerns about what the hospital would mean for our homes," said Erin Morrison.

Morrison and her husband have lived in their West Knoxville neighborhood for more than three years, and they are not the only ones with signs in their yard rejecting the idea of a new Tennova hospital nearby.

"Are we going to have ambulances racing down the street? Are we going to have helicopters flying over and landing in the wee morning hours?"

These are concerns that have been brought up in hopes of stopping the construction of a new facility on a 110-acre property near Middlebrook Pike and Old Weisgarber Road.

Thursday an email was sent to Tennova employees, saying quote "We believe a new facility would help move our entire system forward," and that in the past several weeks they have been reviewing the site, design and capacity of the plans.

The email also said quote, "We are nearing the completion of this process."

That was news Morrison and her family did not want to hear.

"We love it. It's quiet. It's part of a great part of town so hopefully it stays as wonderful as it is now," she said.

But she says if the hospital is going to be built, she hopes they can work together to ensure the integrity of their neighborhood.

"As long as we can be good neighbors with them as well as we can with each other I think it could be a positive. It's just right now not knowing," said Morrison.

The email to Tennova employees says the company plans to begin the certificate of need process for the new facility by June.
