Posted:
KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol announced it will hold DUI checkpoints on Friday, May 2nd in Knoxville. THP says it will also increase patrols from Friday, May 2nd through Monday, May 5th, Cinco de Mayo.

THP says the aggressive enforcement is part of its year-long “Drive to Zero Fatalities” campaign.

THP says State Troopers will use historical crash data as a basis for targeting specific areas during this time.
Eight people were killed in traffic crashes during the Cinco de Mayo holiday period in 2013. As of May 1, 264 people have been killed on Tennessee roadways in 2014, which is 16 fewer than this same time in 2013.

Seat belt, driver license, and sobriety checkpoints will be held at the following locations in Knoxville on Friday, May 2nd:
  • Sobriety - Union S.R. 61 @ Corryton-Luttrell Rd
  • Sobriety - Loudon U.S. 70 @ Creekwood Blvd.

  • If you’re impaired, call a taxi, use public transportation, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  • Use the local Sober Ride program.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, promptly contact your local law enforcement agency (Dial *THP)
  • Remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you or someone you know is about to ride with one that is impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to their destination safely.
