SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - The Sevierville Police Department is warning citizens about a telephone scam in which a person claims to be with the department and demands money.

SPD says a resident told them Thursday that he had been contacted by someone claiming to be an SPD dispatcher.

The man said the caller told him he owed money to a company and that if he didn't pay it, the caller would contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Officers say those committing telephone and Internet fraud will often prey on less suspecting individuals and may use intimidation in an effort to get money or personal information.

SPD says to never provide personal information or send money to anyone before confirming their authenticity.

Persons committing telephone and internet fraud will often prey on less suspecting individuals and may sometimes attempt to use intimidation to get money or personal information.

If you have been contacted by a suspicious person requesting or demanding personal information or money, please contact the SPD  at (865) 453-5506     or your local law enforcement agency.
