Gunman taken into custody after barricading himself in Knoxville home

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville Police have taken Shane Jonathan Tucker  into custody after a lengthy standoff at a North Knoxville home. Both sides of I-40 are open to traffic again.

Early Saturday, the man reportedly fired several shots, then holed up in a home just off the interstate on Wheeler Street.

According to Knoxville Police Department spokesperson Darrell Debusk, the gunman has locked himself inside his home. Officials say that the building is a home broken into several apartments.

Police say that a woman is still inside a basement compartment, but that she is safe and is being instructed not to come out.

6 News spoke with a woman whose godmother owns the building that the suspect is renting.

The neighbor describes the man as being around 30-years-old. We're told he works as a landscaper and that he is married with children, but that he lives alone.

The neighbor also says that the suspect is able to see the interstate from his kitchen window.

Authorities say the initial call came in around 8:45 a.m. and that officers were on scene within just a few minutes.

Debusk confirmed that there were reports of shots fired overnight, and that there was a good possibility that the two incidents were connected.

A neighbor says that a car drove by early Saturday morning firing along the 2100 block of Mitchell Street. The neighbor says his van was riddled with gunfire and his rear window shot out.

6 News viewer Jennifer Dukes posted on our Facebook page that she alerted authorities about the gunman: "I placed the call this morning on my way to Market Square. It was a man standing by the guard rail between James White and Cherry St. waving a gun at traffic and holding a 2x4."
