KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Ijam's Nature Center in South Knoxville welcomed a large crowd Sunday for opening weekend at Mead's Quarry.

New this season, River Sports Outfitters is expanding its operations near the quarry, including adding a new handicapped accessible dock along the riverside.

10-year-old Christina and her best friend Ashlynn spent Sunday at the quarry, trying something new.

"We're going to ride paddleboards and canoes," Ashlynn said.

Christina's dad, Glenn Richards, says he welcomes all the changes to the area.

"They've got a lot going on here now. They've put a lot of money in this area," Richards said.

"You can paddleboard, you can canoe, kayak or mountain bike," said Cameron Clark, a River Sports Outfitters employee.

Clark says his company is now in its fourth year at Mead's Quarry, and they're expecting the busiest season yet.

"It's grown from a little small pod in the woods, and now here on the quarry with an actual building and structure, and we're open every weekend," Clark said.

Also new this year, Bearden Beer Market employees will be selling drinks at the quarry on Saturdays. Customer Joe Baker says he plans to come as often as he can.

"We're just out here having fun in the water, paddleboarding, swimming, enjoying the weather, got some spring fever," Baker said.
