Sunsphere observation deck to reopen to the public

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The observation desk of Knoxville's Sunsphere is scheduled to reopen to the public Tuesday after a renovation project.

In addition to basic upgrades like new floor and ceiling tiles, the observation deck now has updated information on activities available in Knoxville.

The original kiosks that line the perimeter now include information on local attractions as well as historical and fun facts about the city. Two kiosks include maps with QR codes for downloading on mobile devices. An iPad has been installed in another kiosk to provide and collect visitor information.

A gallery of rotating images of Knoxville sites was installed along the interior wall. A separate section of the interior wall shows the history of the World's Fair.

Tourism officials also teamed with Knox County Schools' art department to develop Knoxville themed murals in the two alcoves.

The grand re-opening is part of National Travel and Tourism Week. Regular hours for the observation deck will be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
