Ju'Wuan James focuses on softball ahead of NFL draft

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - At 6-foot-6 and 311 pounds, Ju'Wuan James may be the Lady Vol softball team's biggest fan.  The former Tennessee offensive lineman is just days away from hearing his name called in the NFL draft and he's spending his time at the ballpark. "Me and the o-line have been coming for years," James said.

An interest in the sports of softball is just one of the reasons for his near religious attendance. James is dating Lady Vol rightfielder Rainey Gaffin. "I just come out here and support her and support all my friends out there," said James.

James is considered by many the most talented member of last season's much heralded Tennessee offensive line. "All through the season and all through past years, we'd argue and compete about who is the best lineman on the team," James said.

That will soon be settled. At least, in the eyes of the NFL in the upcoming draft beginning May 8th.

"It's kind of exhilarating, I guess," said James. "Exciting and anxious, those type of feelings because you don't know where you're going to go or when you're going to go."

James has been projected as a possible first rounder but isn't banking on it just yet because, as he said, "It seems like every year, nobody knows."

James added that he wasn't going to have any expectations heading into the draft and, no matter what happens, he plans to stay humble, despite the fact that he will likely be a millionaire in less than a week. That may be why he spent his last weekend in Knoxville at a softball game.

"I still feel like a kid no matter what," James said. "I try to stay humble, I'm a down to earth guy. I'm not going to let any of that change me."
Which means there will likely be a current NFL player in the stands cheering on the the Lady Vols next season.
