KNOXVILLE (WATE) - For some of you, saving money is a sport. Here in East Tennessee, going to Pigeon Forge, with its hundreds of outlet stores, is like going to the World Series.

Cynthia in Maryville asks: "Bargain hunting is in my blood. I wait for sales before I buy. Is that weird?"

A new survey shows that 83 percent of women today claim they are bargain shoppers, and they'll go to any length to save a buck.

In 2011, the national Consumer Reports survey indicated only 76 percent of women then said they were bargain hunters. Today, eight out of ten women claimed in the survey that they would look for a sale even if money were no object.

Seventy-seven percent report never regretting buying a sale item.

Additionally, the survey shows six out of ten women wait for a sale in order to buy what they want.

Here are some of the popular strategies women use. Sixty-four percent will use paper coupons, 62 percent will go straight to the sale rack, and 52 percent will request a rain check for sale items that were out of stock.

When they turn to shopping online, 42 percent will look up online coupons or promo codes, 41 percent will use a search engine such as Google to compare prices, and 49 percent subscribe to e-mail sales alerts from retailers.

Things have changed a lot in three years. Smartphone coupon use is up 118 percent. In 2014, 24 percent say they use smartphone coupons, compared to only 11 percent in 2011.

On the other hand, paper coupon use is down 23 percent in the last three years. Sixty-four percent of women say they use paper coupons today, compared to 83 percent in 2011.

So if you're a bargain hunter, don't feel bad. You are not alone and you have good company.
