NEWPORT (WATE) - Incumbent Sheriff Armando Fontes defeated veteran lawmaker, Newport's police chief Maurice Shults, by a margin of nearly two to one in Tuesday's primary election.

Fontes won the race 4,885 votes to 2,884 votes, or 63 percent to 37 percent.

The two have a history of conflict, including an incident two years ago in which Chief Shults claimed injury after Sheriff Fontes slammed a door in his face.

Fontes spoke Tuesday night on what the victory means to him.

"It means so much because of hard work and dedication and team work we have provided in the department. I've earned the trust of the community. And they have spoken by giving their vote to keep me in office," he said.

Fontes will face independent candidate Eddie Raider in the General Election in August.

Shults also spoke on his defeat.

"I'm just so thankful for the people that stood by me and supported this from the start. It was a career goal. I made a shot at it. Promised myself I would and I have, and I gotta go back to work in the morning at 8 o'clock," he said.
