KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Three Republican candidates are vying for the Knox County Trustee position, to go up against Democratic candidate James Barrier in the August election.

Craig Leuthold

Incumbent Craig Leuthold has held the position on an interim basis for nine months after John Duncan III pleaded guilty to official misconduct and resigned.

Previously he was a longtime employee of the trustee's office.

He says the office is now being run in the right way and wants to continue that.

"Our revenues are up, our employee costs are down, and I've had three quarterly audits all of which have come back 100 percent compliant. We're doing things the right way. We will continue to do things the way people would like this office ran," Leuthold said.

Ed Shouse

Candidate Ed Shouse was a longtime county commissioner and also served on Knoxville City Council. He says while he has served in government, his full-time career has been away from politics, and that makes him the best candidate.

"My opponents in the Republican primary have both been lifelong bureaucrats really working for county government in one capacity or another, and while I've had government service, it's been part time and it's been elected. I've had a full-time career in banking and the railroad industry. I think that clearly separates me from my opponents," Shouse said.

Barry Hawkins

Commercial real estate salesman Barry Hawkins is a fresh face to the race. He has never ran for office and has never held public office. He feels this will help him in his candidacy.

"I'm a fresh name with a fresh face. Both of my opponents, I'm not just saying this, they're career politicians. They've been on City Council for a number of years and both have been on County Commission for a number of years so that's the difference between me and my two opponents," Hawkins said.
