KINGSTON (WATE) - You may soon see the phrase "In God We Trust" displayed at the Roane County Courthouse.  A Roane County commissioner has filed a resolution to have the national motto displayed at the entrance of the courthouse and inside the courthouse in the county commission chambers.

Roane County Commissioner Randy Ellis says he filed the resolution after hearing from many people.

“You don't have to look around Roane County much to see our faith.  You know you've got the 10 Commandments in yards and in gymnasiums, and a lot of my constituents and pastors are really encouraging me to pass this resolution,” said Ellis.

Alisa Smith, co-owner of Amazing Bakes Cookies and Cakes and long-time Roane County resident supports the idea.

“I think it's a great idea especially if tax payers’ money is not paying for it. It is donation based. I think it's a wonderful idea,” said Smith.

Ellis says similar resolutions passed last year in Morgan, Anderson and Putnam counties, allowing the phrase “In God We Trust” to be displayed at the counties’ courthouses.

“It's becoming a nationwide movement, and there is well over 200 or 300 counties and cities across the nation that it's actually went into effect,” said Ellis.

If passed by commissioners, the resolution would allow “In God We Trust” to be displayed at the entrance of the Roane County Courthouse and in the County Commission chambers located inside the courthouse.

“We are not going to use any public funds to pay for the signage so at that point if it passes I'll get an estimate for what it will cost to put the “In God We Trust” up then I start seeking donations from the community,” said Ellis.

Ellis says hasn't heard from anyone in opposition of the resolution. 6 News asked a dozen residents and everyone was in support of displaying “In God We Trust” at the courthouse.

Yeah I think that that's a good idea that that would be there. It's founded on the country so I think it should be in our community as well,” said Roane County Resident Randy McCormick.

Roane County commissioners will vote on the resolution Monday night at 7:00 at the Roane County Courthouse in the commission meeting room.
Before the vote on Monday, Commissioner Ellis says people will have a chance to make a public comment and share their opinions on the resolution.

Eight of the 15 commissioners will have to vote in favor of the resolution for it to pass.
