KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knox County Sheriff's Office says 49-year-old JJeffery Willard Wooten of 1912 Millard Beets Road killed a man, stole a car then led police on a high-speed chase in Knoxville on Friday.

Wooten has a criminal history in Knox County that includes resisting, simple possession, armed robbery, burglary, flight/escape, weapon offense, and stolen vehicle.

He is also wanted for armed robbery and aggravated assault out of Norcross, Georgia for
robbing a Waffle House with a pitchfork. He has a fugitive from justice warrant for that with no bond.

The Sheriff's Office says Friday's incident began as a burglary at 7622 Hunters Ridge Way around noon. The suspect shot and killed the homeowner, identified as Randy Lands, 44.

The victim's mother and sister returned home during the burglary. The suspect held them at gunpoint and stole the sister's car. Neither woman was injured, but the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of chest pains. Neighbors say they're simply shocked thinking that their neighborhood was safe, now learning that crime has no address.

"It's kind of scary knowing that things are taking place that would involve all this and bring all this to our neighborhood and we do have kids that play outside and something serious could be happening," said Michael Lafollette.

Wooten was captured just before 4 p.m. after a short pursuit that ended on Lovell Road. He is charged with first degree murder with no bond and two counts of aggravated robbery for a combined bond of $100,000.

Nearby Carter Elementary, Middle and High schools as well as Sunnyview Primary were put on lockdown as a precaution, but the lockdown has since been lifted.
