Tellico Plains woman killed in three-car crash in Blount County

Blount County, TN - MARYVILLE (WATE) - A Tellico Plains woman was killed Monday in a three-car crash on U.S. Highway 411 that the Blount County Sheriff's Office says was caused by a reckless driver.

Deputies say Jason David Dyer, 27, was traveling north on Highway 411 near Springview Road in a 2002 Nissan Altima around 11 a.m. when he started passing vehicles at a high rate of speed in the turn lane.

Dyer lost control of his vehicle, drifted into the southbound lane, and struck a Pontiac Firebird driven by Haley Sparks, 19, of Maryville.

The impact caused the left front wheel of Dyer's car to sheer off, which in turn caused the car to rotate counter-clockwise and into the path of a Toyota Camry driven by Lola Walker, 72, of Tellico Plains.

Dyer was ejected from the passenger side window and onto the roadway.

Walker died at UT Medical Center late Monday afternoon. A passenger in her vehicle, James L. Gray, 76, is still receiving treatment.

Dyer was flown to UT Medical Center for treatment. Sparks is receiving treatment at Blount Memorial Hospital.

Charges against Dyer are pending.

Officials say Dyer had just bonded out of jail Sunday morning after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence and drug possession.
