TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Joe Redner has been in the news off and on since the 1970's. Perhaps most famous as the owner of the Mons Venus, a nude club that is known around the world.

He's battled politicians, and more recently cancer. Through it all, he's stayed positive about his health, passionate about peoples rights, and now as he approaches his 74th birthday, Redner has a new focus. It's the Cigar City Brewing Company, a craft beer company founded by his son, Joey. Redner was so inspired by Joey's knowledge of the business, he decided to finance it. Redner says "I just got out of the way, and let him go." Today is continue to grow into a multimillion dollar business.

As for Joe, he no longer finds himself in the spotlight as owner of the Mons Venus. But that doesn't mean he doesn't still run it, and in fact says he still goes there three times a day to check on things.

The controversy that followed him decades ago has died down, when he says he was arrested 150 times or more, and his employees were arrested thousands of times on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior. He's quick to point out those charges were dismissed.

He still takes price in the reputation of the Mons Venus and the women who work there. Still a believer that human sexuality is a beautiful thing, Redner says his strippers were not only the best treated in the business - he says the Mons was known as a club that had no prostitution and no drugs.

He still through every newspaper and opinion piece he can ready, every day. This activist says he wants to know what's going on in the world and says when it comes to politics, you have to lie, cheat and steal to get elected in this country now. "You can't get unless you sell your soul to the devils, and the special interest are the devil," Redner pronounces.

Back in 2007, Redner threw his hat in the political ring, forcing a run-off election for Tampa City Council. He lost with 44 percent of the vote. He says he wanted to get elected to protect people. To this day, he still contends that he would be in a political office - if people understood him.

Another battle has taken front and center in Redner's life. He was recently diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Redner credits good doctors and his own stubbornness with helping him into remission. He says even with such a dire diagnosis, he never thought this was the end.

And lest you think you think Joe Redner doesn't care what people think about him, when asked what he wants people to think about him, he said that he is a kind and fair, honest and compassionate person. "That's what I want people to think about me," Redner expressed. And just like everyone else, he wants to be loved.
