KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Transportation Security Administration says it found a loaded gun at a security checkpoint at McGhee Tyson Airport Tuesday.

The .357 pistol loaded with 13 rounds was found a carry-on bag belonging to passenger Edward Harwood, 44 of North Carolina, around 2:30 p.m.

Airport police were immediately alerted. Harwood was cited for possession of a weapon and is scheduled to appear in Blount County General Sessions Court on May 27.

Harwood said he thought he removed the weapon from the bag prior to leaving for his trip.

In addition to potential criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to a checkpoint face civil penalties from TSA.

TSA says firearms can only be transported in checked baggage, must be declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case, and unloaded. Firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags.

This is the fourth discovery of a firearm in a carry-on bag at McGhee Tyson this year. A total of eight were found in 2013.
