Knox County Schools to receive less state funding than projected

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Schools recently received funding information from the state of Tennessee saying state funding to the school system will be significantly less than the amount projected in the system's budget request.

A news release from the office of Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett states he and his staff will present Knox County Commission next week a new reduced budget proposal that will reflect the state's decrease in projected BEP funding.

"While it is unfortunate that the state's BEP funding estimates are being further reduced from their initial projections, Knox County must not fall into the trap of using one-time money to pay for ongoing expenses," Mayor Burchett said.

While Knox County Schools rely heavily on state funding through the BEP, Knox County is actually a BEP "donor" county.  That means Knox County sends significantly more revenue to Nashville to fund BEP statewide than our local schools receive each year.
