KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Two years after the crime, a man is charged with killing the mother of his child.

31-year-old Norman Clark of Knoxville was arrested Wednesday afternoon, charged with first degree murder.

Police say he killed Brittany Eldridge and her unborn son in December 2011.

Eldridge was 8 months pregnant.

She was found in her apartment strangled and stabbed.

Neighbors say they knew Clark's family well and his arrest is shocking.

They say it is a quiet neighborhood.

"I've lived here 25 years and we've never had any kind of problems," said Carl Taylor.

Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Starhurst and Sundrop that all changed.

"The road was full of police cars when I came in and they were there for quite a while," said Taylor

6 News looked into Clark's criminal history.

He faced misdemeanor theft charges in 2008, but those charges were dropped.

He has not had any since, until now.

"Shock, just I knew something had to be wrong because that's not typical. The police have never been to that house," said Greg Drinnen.

Drinnen has lived across from Clark's family for nearly 13 years.

He says the whole thing is unbelievable.

"You couldn't ask for a better neighbor. They're always there. If you need anything, they're there," he said.

Clark worked with Eldridge at Clayton Homes.

Police say he was once in a relationship with Eldridge and that he was the father of her child.

He was seen with Eldrigde's friends and family outside the apartment where she was killed at a vigil shortly after her death.

Friends of Clark's family say they cannot believe he is responsible.

"We hope it's a mistake yes. Like they say innocent until proven guilty so yes because they're a very good family," said Drinnen.

Police have not given any motive for the killing.

Clark is being held on a $1 million bond.

Eldridge's mom, Robin Owens, released this statement Wednesday evening:

"To God be the glory and may he always get the praise -God will get Justice for Brittany and Baby Zeke-everything is in God's timing-This has been a very emotional day and I thank everyone for their prayers and support."
