KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Hard work and persistence is paying off for a group of Knoxville 5th grade students, the Safety Patrol students from Adrian Burnett Elementary school have been trying to raise money for a trip to Washington D.C. for months.

It costs each student more than $400 to go and so far the fundraiser has been able to cut that price in half, but they're still working to make sure every students get the trip of a lifetime.

The student who spearheaded this campaign said he wanted to make sure no one would feel left out if their parents couldn't afford it.

"Just doing the fundraiser is going to make it a whole lot better, a whole lot funner. like we earned it going to Washington," said 5th grader Jordan Bishop.

"They learned if they set a goal, maybe they don't reach the actual goal. But it's not a failure if you come in short, you're just proud of yourself. They've learned how to set goals for themselves," said Bishop's mom Angela Bishop.

The garage sale is Thursday May 22nd, and lasting through the weekend, in the Castlegate subdivision off Crown Road in North Knoxville.

Any items not purchased will be donated to the local VA.
