Lady Vols crush Charleston Southern in NCAA opener
Knoxville (WATE/UT Sports) - Tennessee exploded with eight runs in the first inning en route to a 12-3 (5) win over Charleston Southern on Friday in Game 2 of the Knoxville Regional.
Tennessee (27-32-1) scored eight in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth. Charleston Southern (27-32-1) scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning.
Tennessee's 12 runs set a new program record for runs scored in NCAA Tournament play. The Lady Vols previously scored 11 runs in an 11-2 win over Virginia on May 22, 2010, in the 2010 Knoxville Regional.
UT tied its program record for runs scored in one inning in NCAA Tournament play with eight runs in the first. The Lady Vols previously scored eight runs in the fourth inning of a 10-0 win over Illinois-Chicago on May 20, 2004.
Tennessee will next face Virginia Tech (home team) in Game 3 on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
Charleston Southern (home team) will play Lipscomb in Game 4 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
The loser of Game 3 and the winner of Game 4 will face each other in Game 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
