TVA names 3 local reservoirs below target annual levels

NORRIS (WATE) - TVA says three out of its 10 reservoirs are below target levels and will need almost three-times the average rainfall for this time of year to catch up.

Those three reservoirs are Norris Lake, Cherokee Lake and the South Holston Reservoir.

To give you an idea just how unusual lake levels are this year, TVA says they haven't seen the water this low since 1999 to 2000.

So low, canoers like Matt Mountain aren't finding the same enjoyment out of rowing this year.

"At first it was we were scraping on rocks."

That's because since mid-March, TVA says there hasn't been enough rain to keep reservoirs deep.

"It'd be nice if it were a little higher that way you wouldn't have to worry about rocks and stuff," Mountain said.

Norris is shallow enough that employees at Norris Dam Marina say they need another five feet of water so that work is less frustrating.

"It's too fluctuated it hasn't come up or went down at all," said Corey Roberts, Manager at Norris Dam Marina.

That leaves Corey busy warning boaters to keep a close eye for any underwater dangers.

"It's different every year. You can't ever expect it to come up to the 10/20 or in the winter to e drop down to what we consider the winter pool"

So the hopes these clouds grow darker is mixed since it can be both a blessing for lake levels and a washout for business.
