Vols clinch SEC tournament berth with win over Florida
Knoxville (WATE)- The Tennessee baseball team is heading to the SEC tournament for the first time since 2007 with their 7-5 win over Florida on Saturday. The Gators claimed the first two games of the series securing the top seed in the SEC tournament and the regular season SEC title. But the Vols were undeterred by their opponent's accolades. "It is a huge step to get back to Hoover (Alabama)," said Vols Infielder Taylor Smart. "But, I know there' a lot of guys in that locker room that think this isn't it...There's no telling what we can do." The postseason berth is a huge accomplishment for Vols' Head Coach Dave Serrano. In just his third year with the program he's led the team to it's first winning season since 2010. Tennessee enters the SEC tournament with a 31-22 record overall and 12-18 in conference play.
"I know there are a lot of people out there that are probably wondering why we could be excited about going to a 12-team tournament out of 14 teams, but, gosh darnit, this program hasn't done that for seven years," said Serrano after Saturday's win. "Things weren't perfect, things will never be perfect, but I feel like we lifted a big cloud that's been over this program for the last seven years." Tennessee will be the 11-seed and play 6-seed Vanderbilt on Tuesday morning in a single-elimination game. The game is scheduled for 10:30am ET in Hoover, Ala.
