KNOXVILLE (WATE) - At least one person was injured when a truck went off Interstate 40 in East Knox County Tuesday afternoon and landed on Strawberry Plains Pike.

Dispatchers say the truck was traveling westbound on I-40 around 3:30 p.m. when it went over the overpass, down an embankment, and onto the roadway below.

Two semi-trucks were traveling westbound on I-40 approaching Strawberry Plains when they collided. One of the trucks traveled onto the right-side shoulder and continued over the side of the bridge onto Strawberry Plains. The second truck stopped on the right shoulder just west of the ramp from Strawberry Plains to I-40 west.

The truck did not strike any vehicles on Strawberry Plains pike. The driver of the truck that landed on Strawberry Plains pike was partially trapped and had to be extricated by Knoxville Firefighters.

After extrication, the driver was transported by helicopter to UT Hospital for what appeared to be serious injuries. The driver was talking to rescue personnel while still trapped and after being extricated.

A portion of Strawberry Plains Pike was closed for a time. Officers are continuing to investigate the crash.
