Smokies resort officials investigating possible credit card fraud

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - Officials at the Wilderness at the Smokies resort are investigating after possible credit card fraud involving some of its customers.

The FBI confirms it is also looking into complaints of credit cards being compromised at the resort.

Ellen Liston, director of public relations and events, says members of a religious conference that had been held at the resort several weeks ago informed management that several of their credit cards had been compromised.

Liston says the resort immediately began an investigation and contacted the appropriate authorities. She issued a statement Wednesday saying the resort has now contracted with a private security company to investigate the matter.

"Wilderness at the Smokies has now contracted with a private cyber security company that specializes in researching and identifying these types of situations.  As a company, we want to do everything possible to maintain the integrity of all operations at Wilderness at the Smokies so we are taking this extra step to ensure maximum security with all operations."

Any customer who has a concern can send an email to the resort's information account at

FBI officials say their Cyber Agents and computer technicians are working to determine if an investigation is warranted.
