MARYVILLE (WATE) - The man officials say is responsible for a deadly accident in Blount County last week was charged on Tuesday following his release from the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Jason David Dyer, 27, of Walland, Tenn. was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and felony reckless endangerment. He is scheduled to appear at a 9 a.m. May 30 hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court.

Deputies say Dyer was traveling north on Highway 411 near Springview Road in a 2002 Nissan Altima around 11 a.m. when he started passing vehicles at a high rate of speed in the turn lane.

Dyer lost control of his vehicle, drifted into the southbound lane, and struck a Pontiac Firebird driven by Haley Sparks, 19, of Maryville.

The impact caused the left front wheel of Dyer's car to sheer off, which in turn caused the car to rotate counter-clockwise and into the path of a Toyota Camry driven by Lola Walker, 72, of Tellico Plains. Walker died later at UT Medical Center. Her passenger was her brother, James L. Gray, 76. He was treated and released from UT Medical Center.

Dyer had been released on bond the day before the accident after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence and drug possession.
