HARRIMAN (WATE) - Not everyone is cut out to start a business, but in Harriman, Mary Gail Gallaher says starting a business seemed like the only thing she could do.

Mary Gail Gallaher has the eye of an artist and the soul of an entrepreneur.

For years, Gallaher worked for a paycheck learning, among other skills, framing art. However, she says she kept finding herself out of a job.

"You get sort of tired of getting laid off from jobs all the time, you know?" said Gallaher.

She started her own business in 2001. That business failed, succumbing, like many businesses, to the recession.

She didn't give up.

"So I started going to arts and crafts fairs stuff like that, trying to keep my name out there. And like I said, I got tired of being laid off and said, 'Well, let's try it again,'" she said.

Last September, Mary Gail's Custom Framing and Gifts opened in the Shoppes at Walden Ridge, 2305 N. Gateway Avenue. It offers custom framing, jewelry and other home interior items, including candles.

"I started out with a plain old glass. Well, it sold, but then I started putting things on it and it sold even better. Then I got wild with it, and it sells great."

Gallaher hopes this time her business will prosper, but she realizes how difficult the task can be.

"This is really a big step You're just praying to God that this thing is going to work out," Gallaher said

She hopes folks in Roane County recognize her hard work and her business, made in Tennessee.
