PIGEON FORGE (WATE) - Tourists were packing into Sevier County this weekend as the summer season kicks off.

Schools across the country are letting out, and many people are heading to the mountains for some time off.

"Very busy, very busy. Bumper to bumper, but it's nice," said Nathan and Sherry Harper.

It is time for the tourists to start lining the streets in Sevier County.

"Beautiful country. It's a nice place to tour," said Paula and Fred Barron.

More than 11 million visitors head to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg every year.

"Great so far! Just a lot of things to see," said the Barrons.

It does not take long for the traffic to get backed up.

"Everybody's trying to see everything they can see in a limited amount of time I guess," said Nathan Harper.

For businesses like the Country Barn Gift Shop in Pigeon Forge, when summer hits they are ready.

"We're geared up. We've got the store stocked, and we can't wait," said co-owner Cynthia Jordan.

They say Memorial Day weekend is a sneak preview of what the rest of the summer might bring.

This year it is looking good.

"We did well this weekend and we're hoping the rest of the summer will be the same," said Jordan.

They also say recent growth in the area, like the opening of The Island in Pigeon Forge, helps the whole area by bringing even more people in.

Business owners in Sevier County say the busy summer season helps balance out some of the slower tourism times throughout the year, so they are hoping for a good one.
