KAT proposing route changes, trolley line extension to serve University Commons

Posted:
KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville Area Transit is proposing several route changes, including an extension of the Vol Line Trolley to serve the new Walmart and Publix at University Commons.

The trolley would use current routing through the downtown area which serves Knoxville Station, Krutch Park and the convention center. The trolley would then turn from Cumberland Avenue and travel through the University of Tennessee area along Volunteer Boulevard, and would provide direct service into University Commons, taking the new bridge from Joe Johnson Drive.

The trolley would keep the same hours and remain fare free. If approved, the change would take effect on Monday, July 28 with the opening of University Commons.

Other changes proposed include on routes 41 (Chapman Highway) and 45 (Vestal) to change the routing in and out of downtown to begin using the Henley Bridge again. This would eliminate stops on Hill Avenue and Blount Avenue, as the buses would use Church Avenue to Henley.

On Route 40 (South Knoxville), the loop routing around Moody, Tomlinson and Young High Pike would be reversed to provide a better pick-up location for Chapman Square passengers.

Also, on Route 90 (Crosstown), there would be a number of timing adjustments to allow for transfers at West Town Mall as well as better evening transfers at the Fountain City Superstop. The plan also includes a proposal to use Old Broadway northbound as well as southbound.

If approved, these changes would take effect on Monday, August 25.
