KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Two people have been confirmed dead after two separate crashes that closed Interstate 40 eastbound Friday afternoon at Asheville Highway.

The crashes were reported just after 4 p.m. One eastbound lane was reopened around 5 p.m. The eastbound ramp to Asheville Highway is also closed.

In the first crash, traffic had come to an abrupt stop on the eastbound ramp to Asheville Highway. A tractor trailer rear ended a white car which then became sandwiched between the tractor trailer and an Expedition. Two people were killed. Officials are still trying to get one person out of a third car.

In the second, related crash, a truck rear ended a Dodge Charger, hit the side wall, and then side swiped another tractor trailer. One person was injured and taken to UT Medical Center.

The Knoxville police and fire departments are working to render aid, investigate the accident and clear the roadway. I-40 was opened up around 9 p.m. fully Friday night to all lanes of traffic following more than 4 hours of closure.
