SEYMOUR (WATE) - A community is coming together to help out a local high school.

Seymour High School has been raising money to pay the bill for its new football turf, but after some recent vandalism they have even more to raise to fix the brand new field.

"This community has always supported the school. I'm a Seymour graduate. It's one of the things I've always loved about Seymour," said Assistant Football Coach Darrel Lauderdale.

Just over a week ago police say three recent graduates broke onto the field and vandalized it, spray painting parts of the turf which now have to be replaced.

Now the community is coming together to help.

"We've got some money to raise, and you know we're always willing to work," said Lauderdale.

School officials say the fundraisers are so important because they have to raise more than $100,000 of the $600,000 price tag for that new football turf.

Add on top of that the damages that now have to be fixed and they say they have got a way to go.

"From what I understand the bill for the damage done is somewhere between 30 to 50 (thousand), around there," said Lauderdale.

Even though Saturday's fundraiser was planned before the vandalism, they say the showing of support since then is amazing.

"We've had a lot of people come out. We've got a good crowd out there tonight, sold quite a few tickets," said Event Organizer/Coach Matt Shuler.

"I think the people are very proud of that football field and they want to see it put back the way it was," said Lauderdale.

18-year-olds Jacob Shields, Joshua Lewis-Jones and Jacob Lewis-Jones were all arrested Friday and charged with felony vandalism.
