KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Imagine an active shooter coming into your place of work or child's school. It's a situation hopefully you never have to face, but it is a real life scenario that not only law enforcement trains for but businesses too.

Dozens of businesses, first responders, and law enforcement agencies from several counties gathered Thursday to learn how to react during and before a shooting.

The seminar was held by the Department of Homeland Security giving people the chance to learn the warning signs that could lead to a dangerous situation and how to handle it while it is happening.

It was not only for law enforcement to learn but also local businesses.

They say it is very important to know how you can prevent something like a shooting from happening because it can happen anytime, anywhere, and usually there are warning signs.

"We're hearing in the news every day of events occurring throughout the country and it's really important that business owners and other entities to be able to plan for the possibilities of something like this occurring to keep their employees safe," said David Harrington with the Oak Ridge Fire Department.

DHS says they do about 45 of these seminars per year to spread awareness.

They have done three so far this week in Tennessee also traveling to Memphis and Chattanooga.
