KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The suspect in an officer-involved shooting was shot and killed Saturday morning in East Knoxville.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, around 7 a.m. a female reported to police that she had been assaulted around McConnell Street.

She was able to provide the responding officer with an approximate location of the suspect.

Upon the officer's arrival, the suspect shot on the officer, striking him in the arm. KPD says his bullet-proof vest caught at least one round of fire.

Neighbors in the area say it caught them by surprise so early in the morning.

"Sounded like it was in the house. It's scary when it's in your neighborhood and right across the street from you," East Knoxville resident Jerry Trautman said.

The officer was rushed to UT Medical Center but is expected to recover. The names of those involved are not being released at this time.

This all happened around the area of Chestnut Street and Graves Street. Trautman says it was far too close for comfort.

"See one police man going back and forth through the houses, and all of a sudden you hear 'get down get down get down.' and next thing you hear gunshots," Trautman said.
