KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Crews finished taking down the damaged roof at Beaty Chevrolet Tuesday night. Employees 6 News spoke to had no idea the storm would cause so much damage.

"All of a sudden you hear a racket and you turn around and look and the whole roof is lifting up," said Charles Burchfield, who works at the dealership.

Burchfield and others were trying to pull their cars under an awning when the storm hit the dealership. He says all he saw beforehand were dark clouds.

"Never seen anything quite like that. It was very powerful. It was a lot of damage. It lasted no more than 2 to 3 seconds," said Burchfield.

The severe weather took off portions of the metal roof and insulation from the dealership's body shop and parts storage. The owner tells 6 News that the facility has a double layered roof and only one layer was taken off.

However, he says there was a small piece of the building exposed. Employees say there was no warning in site.

"Even though it didn't look very dangerous, it came on all so quick. You really had no warning or time to get where you were going," said Burchfield.

Nobody was inside the areas that were hit, but Burchfield says the outcome could have been a lot different if the storm came a few hours earlier.

"Luckily no employees were in that area at that time, so good thing it hit when it did," said Burchfield.

No word on the cost of the damage to the dealership. They are waiting on estimates from their insurance company.

The dealership is expected to reopen Wednesday morning.
