KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Southern Baptists have a new leader this week, and he's speaking out against gay marriage.

As the incoming president of the nearly 16-million Southern Baptists, Ronnie Floyd says the group plans to stick to traditional values, despite more public acceptance of gay marriage. Some local pastors are happy with this decision.

"We need a standard. There are some issues that even within the church you can agree to disagree. This is just one of those issues that the bible is really clear on what is right and what is considered wrong biblically," said Corey Jones, pastor of Central Baptist Church in Kingston.

Jones says the church hasn't always been the best at handling hot topic issues like gay marriage, but he says it's a conversation that needs to be had.

"There is a reservation about even approaching the topic because it's an issue that strikes so many emotions in so many different families," Jones said.

He also says Christians shouldn't let issues like this stop them from welcoming everyone into their churches.

Some Christians, like Margo Ingram, say churches shouldn't take a stance against gay marriage, but simply accept everyone for who they are.

"I just wish we all did our own thing a little bit more and didn't get so caught up in everybody's business," Ingram said.
