Young-Williams Animal Center closed Friday and Saturday due to virus

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Young-Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, will be closed Friday and Saturday because several cats have come in contact with a virus.

The virus is called panleukopenia virus, and is similar to parvovirus in dogs. Symptoms include diarrhea, lethargy and vomiting. It can be fatal to infected animals.

Shelter staff will disinfect all cat areas during the closure.

Due to the disinfection protocols, space is limited for incoming animals. While Young-Williams says it never turns away an animal, owners wishing to surrender their pets are encouraged to wait until Sunday if at all possible.

Young-Williams Animal Center also provides resources and information that may help struggling pet owners keep their pets when possible. These resources include the Pet Food Pantry, which provides free pet food to pre-approved, low-income pet owners.

The Young-Williams Animal Village, 6400 Kingston Pike, is not affected and will remain open.
