JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) - Television host, author and former U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Oliver North spent part of his book tour in Johnson City firing back at comedian Jon Stewart.

North, who was in town promoting his latest book Counterfeit Lies, didn't hold back when asked about recent comments Stewart made on The Daily Show, at one point referring to Stewart as a "jackass."

On an episode of The Daily Show last week, Stewart criticized North's recent comments on the Bowe Bergdahl controversy, implying "former National Security Council member Oliver Iran-Contra North" is a hypocrite. Stewart reminded his viewers that North was once in a political scandal of his own involving hostages.  [LINK: The Daily Show - The Blind Decide (exerpt from show starts at 4.29) ]

"(He's) a man, who back in the Reagan administration, gained a great deal of hands on terrorist negotiation experience when he helped trade 2,000 missiles to the country of Iran for help in trying to free seven Americans being held in Lebanon and then used the money from that missile sale to fund Nicaraguan contras or as they were sometimes referred to 'Coke fueled jungle death squads,'" Stewart said on his show.

A sarcastic Stewart mocked North saying, "Does this make you mad because it's gone mainstream? I was into using American money to arm terrorist groups way before it was cool."

North has remained critical of the Obama administration for its role in the swap of five Taliban prisoners for U.S. Army Sgt. Bergdahl. North contends the Taliban had nothing to do with the capture of Bergdahl. Instead, he says he was in the hands of a criminal family who is like "the Sopranos on steroids."

"All they wanted, and I know this for a fact, was money," North said about the Bergdahl situation. "The Taliban had nothing to do with Bergdahl. (The U.S.) had this open discussion and sometimes secret discussion that led to the release of five of the most brutal human beings on planet Earth, who weren't just wanted for war crimes. They were wanted for crimes against humanity. Collectively those five probably murdered a quarter of a million people."

Throughout North's book tour he's continued to raise questions about the Bergdahl situation, like whether or not the any ransom money changed hands. He told us he wants to see the equivalent of a military grand jury investigate the Bergdahl situation. In that case, North says Bergdahl would have the chance to answer questions from investigators directly.

"Most civilians don't understand it, because they've never served in the military and Jon Stewart ought to look into it, that jackass," North said. "I had to do things to get live Americans back that didn't include releasing terrible people like this. He can say whatever he wants, but he's never been there. I have. They can call me anything they want. I know what I did, I know why I did it, I know where I'm going and I know why I'm going there."

North released his latest book Monday. Counterfeit Lies outlines a conspiracy, which North says will allow the Iranians to obtain nuclear weapons.

"This is the next big conspiracy, the next big disaster, because it's about how the Iranians are going to evade and avoid the consequences of the international agreement on nuclear weapons that's now being drafted," North said. "Right now, there's a secret meeting going on in Geneva that's determining the final shape of that. The Iranians will agree to it, there will be inspectors, sanctions will be lifted and the Iranians will get nuclear weapons. I've got skin in the game, I've got a lovely wife, I've got four kids all married and 14 grandkids. I do not want their future determined by people who are going to throw nuclear weapons around."
