KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Travelers flying from Knoxville to Chicago now have a new low-fare option.

Frontier Airlines began offering Tuesday its first direct flights from Knoxville to the Windy City.

It’s something officials at McGhee Tyson Airport say has been in the works for a very long time, providing travelers with an inexpensive flight to one of the nation’s most popular destinations.

Passengers took off on the first flight to Chicago Tuesday morning.

"They're one of the top low-fare carriers in the country and it means a lot to offer that type of service and also to connect our cities in this way,” said Howard Vogel, chairman of the board for the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority.

Frontier is offering tickets for just $29 in a special sale.

"The cost? You can't beat it,” said Genienne Sumner of Knoxville, flying to Chicago to see her husband.

It's not just the low fare that has travelers excited. It's also the convenience factor.

"Not only is it good for me, but for my company. If we have people that we need to go up there and work, this is going to be a low cost alternative for them to go,” said Sumner.

Travelers like Betty Snodderly and her family couldn’t be happier about the new option, especially since they are headed to Chicago for a very special occasion.

"We're going to Chicago to celebrate my birthday,” said Snodderly of LaFollette.

They’re pleased to get there a lot faster and cheaper than originally thought.

"It's exciting. It's exciting. We'll have to do this again,” said Snodderly.

For now, it's just a seasonal service, available until September 30, but that could change, depending on popularity.

McGhee Tyson officials hope to turn this new option into better fares for flyers across all airlines.

"Gives us the opportunity to encourage other carriers who also fly here to get into competition. And when you have competition, you have a better service opportunity for our flyers,” said Vogel.

They also hope to get more direct flights from Knoxville to other popular destinations.

To take advantage of the $29 special sale, tickets have to be purchased by midnight Tuesday night.

Right now, the flights are running three times a week, but Vogel says they hope to make that four times a week in the near future.

The $29 fare is only good on certain flights.
