OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Some local kids are back in the classroom this summer learning about math and science, not because they have to, but because they want to. It's called Camp Invention and it's going on this week at Willow Brook Elementary School in Oak Ridge.

Leo Ehlers is only five years old, but he loves learning about science.

"I did not know batteries didn't have to have anything to just connect to lights and work," he said.

His mom is a microbiology teacher and wanted Leo to have a head start in STEM curriculum: science, technology, engineering and math.

"Just hearing him talk about sound waves this morning, he understands how they're generated, how they move. They're not too young to learn this stuff," said Mary Odom.

This is the first year Camp Invention, a nationwide program, has been held in Oak Ridge.

"It covers all that collaborative work, the critical thinking and the problem solving, all things we often feel like we don't get to do with them in school. We don't push them quite far enough. It really is pushing them beyond what they're capable of doing and then they see the success. It's a great way to prepare them for their future," said camp director Lisa Downard.
