RUTLEDGE (WATE) - A Grainger County man is charged with shooting his own father Thursday morning in a dispute over a gun.

The Grainger County Sheriff's Office says William Gregg, 32, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, attempted aggravated burglary and criminal trespassing.

Deputies say they received a 911 call around 5 a.m. Thursday from 148 Cockrum Road that a person had been shot.

Neighbors then called to say someone was at their door and window, trying to get into their house. Other neighbors confronted the man, later identified as William Gregg, and held him until officers arrived.

A handgun was found on the edge of the roadway in front of the home Gregg was allegedly trying to break into.

Deputies soon determined Gregg allegedly shot his father Raymond Gregg, 70, in the face.

A witness said the dispute was over the younger Gregg having possession of Raymond Gregg's handgun the previous day.

Raymond Gregg was taken to UT Medical Center by Lifestar, where he is listed in stable condition.

Gregg was taken to the Rutledge County Jail, where he was also charged with violating parole.
