KNOXVILLE (WATE) -  The city of Knoxville recognized the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act on Thursday.

Legendary civil rights leaders met Thursday evening to remember all of the events that led up to that day back in 1964. Reverend C.T. Vivian was there.

Vivian worked along side Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior.

Civil rights leaders said the mass meetings at African-American churches were an important piece of the Civil Rights movement in the past.

Reverend Harold Middlebrook, Avon Rollins, Bob Booker and former Knoxville mayor Daniel Brown were also there Thursday evening.
