HUNTSVILLE (WATE) - Hundreds of people taking advantage of free medical care this weekend in the East Tennessee county that has the highest number of people out of work in the entire state.

Remote Area Medical brought its free healthcare clinic to Scott County, providing free dental, vision and medical care to anyone who needed it.

The clinic wrapped up Sunday afternoon.

More than 650 people turned out this time, each of them receiving care free of charge, many of them willing to wait hours to be seen.

RAM says the need in this area is great, as Scott County has the state's highest unemployment rate of 13.5 percent.

"This area here in Scott County is one of the poorer counties in the state. This is our seventh time here and always have a 500 plus turnout,” said Ron Brewer, RAM clinic director.

"People aren't working so they don't have the money to go out and pay for it so this is a blessing. It's definitely a blessing,” said patient Chris Beets.

But it’s not just people who live in Scott County taking advantage of the free care.

A number of patients drove hundreds of miles to get help.

"We just had a young man that drove five hours because he had an abscessed tooth,” said Brewer.

Many patients have gone without the care they've needed for a long time simply because the money wasn't there.

Dee Francis is one of those people.

She finally got a new pair of glasses on Sunday that she’s needed for two years.

"This is helping me quite a bit because we just couldn't afford it right now,” said Francis.

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, RAM estimates they provided more than $100,000 worth of free care.

Its care they’re pleased to provide and the patients are thankful to get.

"We see the hugs and we see the handshakes as they walk out of here,” said Brewer.

"It's awesome. It's so flattering that they donate their time to help people out and give them what they need,” said Beets.

RAM clinics  are hosted in counties across the state all year long.

RAM provides general medical care, basic dentistry and vision care, including glasses made on site.
